# Connect AI clients

These setup paths match the ShopMCP snippets and the clients' official instructions, checked on 3 October 2026. Client versions and OAuth availability can differ; ShopMCP has not tested every client version against a live store.

## Claude web

Open Claude **Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector** and enter `https://shopmcp.app/mcp`. Complete Shopify OAuth and choose the ShopMCP connection you want. If Claude asks about client registration, select **Register automatically**. ShopMCP supports Dynamic Client Registration; do not enter a separate client ID or client secret.

## Claude Desktop: remote connector

Claude Desktop can use the same remote MCP connector under **Customize → Connectors**. Add `https://shopmcp.app/mcp`, authorize Shopify OAuth, and choose the ShopMCP connection you want. When client registration appears, select **Register automatically**. You do not need an API key or `claude_desktop_config.json` for this route. Remote connectors are separate from a local desktop MCP configuration.

## Cursor

Open **Cursor Settings → Tools & MCP**, or add the entry to `.cursor/mcp.json`. This setup uses the connection URL and a Bearer header. ShopMCP displays the complete key only when it is created or renewed; treat it like a password. Then check the connection status in Cursor's MCP menu.

Cursor configuration only. Copy the real values from ShopMCP and keep them private:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shopmcp": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://shopmcp.app/mcp/<connection-id>",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <api-key>" }
    }
  }
}
```

## Codex

Set `SHOPMCP_API_KEY` in your local shell to the connection key. Add this to `~/.codex/config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.shopmcp]
url = "https://shopmcp.app/mcp/<connection-id>"
bearer_token_env_var = "SHOPMCP_API_KEY"
```

Set `SHOPMCP_API_KEY` in the environment where Codex starts. Codex reads the variable and sends it as a Bearer token; do not include a `Bearer` prefix in the variable value.

Check the connection with `codex mcp list`. If your Codex client supports OAuth and you want to choose a connection during consent, use the OAuth route at https://shopmcp.app/mcp. See the [Codex MCP configuration reference](https://developers.openai.com/codex/config-reference).

## Claude Code

Run the `claude mcp add` command shown by ShopMCP. It includes the connection URL and Authorization Bearer header. The command may save the key in local client configuration; keep that file private.

## Test and troubleshoot

Open the client's server list or MCP connection view and ask a simple read-only question. For a 401 response, check the key and connection URL. For a denied operation, check the connection, Shopify scopes, and staff account. After changing a key, update the client entry.
